FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hypoluxo, FL, July 30, 2024—Virginia author Carolyn McBride launches a book tour in the Northern Neck, bringing her love for the Potomac River and captivating storytelling to local readers. McBride, a former travel writer and editor with a deep love for the Tidewater Region, invites readers to dive into the beauty and serenity of the Potomac River with her debut novel, The Cicada Spring: A Potomac Shores Novel.
Join McBride for book readings and signings at two events open to the public in mid-August:
Saturday, August 17, at 1:00 p.m.: Artists’ Alliance of Colonial Beach, Gallery at Jarrett Thor Fine Arts, 100 Taylor St., Suite 101, Colonial Beach, Virginia 22443
Sunday, August 18, at 1:00 p.m.: The Woman’s Club of Northumberland County, 2928 Northumberland Hwy., Lottsburg, Virginia 22511
McBride’s heartwarming novel, the first in the series, takes readers on a poignant journey of second chances and resilience through the eyes of a female boat captain as she navigates a crossroads in midlife, finding solace and strength on the shores of the Potomac.
“I find river life deeply romantic. I grew up exploring the Potomac and have always dreamed of writing about boating on our majestic river,” McBride says. After facing a number of “life quakes” before and during the COVID-19 outbreak, she says she sat down to write “when there just wasn’t enough wine, prayer, or therapy to help me heal.”
The Cicada Spring follows an empty nester who finds herself at midlife in a river house on the banks of the Potomac, recovering from the loss of her mother, a failing marriage, and a dubious future in her job. A cast of lively characters—the “Beach Bonfire Babes”—navigate life’s challenges, from parenting and relationships to careers and the pandemic, with humor, wisdom, and unwavering friendship. Like McBride, her characters are grandmothers, mothers, wives, daughters, friends, pet lovers, and boat captains.
Booklife Reviews praises McBride’s evocative writing: “McBride, a former National Geographic magazine staffer, imbues The Cicada Spring with a profound love of nature and infectious curiosity about the Occoquan River and Virginia’s history, going back to its ancient inhabitants.” Fans of Virgin River and Sullivan’s Crossing will find themselves right at home with The Cicada Spring. Join the author as she shares her Potomac Shores journey, including a sneak peek of the second book in the series to be released in Fall 2024.
